So, on Friday I went down to take my placement test for college … the English parts I did really well in and I can go straight into college level English. The Math parts not so much … I almost failed out of the Math portions actually. Which means I need to take a basic Math course which, gives me NO college credits and pass with at least a C+ to be able to start on the Math classes that I need for my degree. Also, because I have to take what is known as a “Transitional Studies” course I have to take a College Orientation Seminar class for either 1 or 3 credit hours.
When I met with the placement testing adviser I mentioned all my frustration & issues trying to do Math that involved things like fractions & equations. I told him that no matter how many times I was shown how to do the equations and given the “rules” to solve the problems I could not understand how to apply them, I couldn’t see how they related much less remember them in order to do homework or take tests. The adviser thinks that it is possible that I have a learning disability in Math. I would need to be tested and get documented results, submit them to the college and then they would be able to accommodate me with things such as one on one tutoring, more time to take tests & the use of a calculator during testing. The catch is that I would have to pay for this evaluation as my insurance doesn’t cover it and the cost is $500 which since I am unemployed is completely impossible. So I have been doing research and I really think that I have Dyscalculia. I am trying to find information on way that I can deal with this so that I can manage to pass this Math class.
The other issue that I think the Math & Orientation classes are going to bring is that I signed up to do my degree completely online and I don’t think that either of these are offered there. Since I completed my placement test and that was the only thing holding up my admission I am hoping to hear back from the school within the next week or two so that I can move forward & meet with an academic counselor, they can register me for the correct classes, and I can talk to financial aid and see that everything is in place without an issue. After that I only need to sign up for my orientation and then I am good to go.
I just want to get all this waiting done … the whole thing has been a hurry up and wait deal and I am impatient!
I think it is good you found out why you have so much trouble in math. Good luck! Can’t believe we are both in school now.
ps: you might want to turn the font color in the input and textarea boxes to black. White doesn’t show up well on gray!
