So as of 9 am today I was jobless. Not just me but, also at least 13 other people because the company I worked for decided to close the 3 stores in my area without any notice. Basically, a district manager came down from corporate and told myself and my assistant that he had bad news the store was closing effective immediately. We were given the option of helping to pack up the store this week so that we would have another weeks pay but, we both opted not to. Why would I chose to be upset all week helping a company pack up the store that I manage when they basically just screwed me over after almost 7 years of loyal service to them?
We did get letters to say that they would give us unemployment1 and that they would mail2 us our last checks & the balance of our PTO that was accrued but, they offered us nothing else.
When I got home this morning I applied online for unemployment and I have to call in the morning to finish my application. So, I guess I am going to spend my summer looking for jobs, perhaps finding an online degree that would work for me and spending every weekday with Kidlet.
When Kidlet got home from one of her finals at 10:30 this morning I had to explain to her what happened and she was so upset. She is worried about how we will be able to afford anything now and I had to explain to her that I will still get money from unemployment but, it won’t be as much as I used to get paid. But, I can spend the summer with her and actually get to do things together this year. She feels guilty that on Friday we went to the mall and I took her on a roughly $200 shopping spree for clothes for her birthday.
I have mixed feelings about the whole situation because since I have started working in 1999 I have only ever been unemployed for roughly 2 months and that was by choice. I have never been fired nor laid off from a job until now.
I am also pretty pissed that my former area manager didn’t give anyone a clue as to what was coming to prepare us and I damn well know that he had to have known. But, of course he still has a job since they gave him stores in PA so he still has a job so what does it really matter to him?
Hell, the owner of the company came into town and looked at all 3 stores and said how great they looked and said how much she loves me but, yet here I am awake & blogging at almost midnight because I don’t have a job to in the morning.
- only the full time employees which there were only 6 of us [↩]
- really why not just direct deposit this as usual? [↩]
Man. That really sucks. I wouldn’t know what to think, going into work and being told that I no longer have a job. It’s happening to a lot of people lately – getting laid off. Just hang in there, and you’ll find something else.
Wow! I’m really sorry. That must have been such a shock. Wishing you all the best as you sort everything out.

That sucks…I hope you are able to find something quickly, but in the mean time there are worse time to be unemployed!
It sounds like you have raised a really great kid!!

So sorry. Try to get them to write you a letter of recommendation. As hard as it is, try not to lash out just in case they do realize their mistake and want to re-hire you in some capacity. Because of the economy, it won’t look as bad as it might have years ago. Maybe it’ll turn out to be a blessing if its short-lived and you get to spend extra time with your girl. Good luck.

Hi,
I’m here from my second ICLW. Nice to ‘meet’ you. Sorry to hear that the company have been absolute jerks. I’d like to wish you all the best in your search for employment.
Kind regards,
Casey
That happened to me last November just two weeks before my birthday. It sucks and dealing with unemployment sucks even more. ButI’m sure you’ll find another job in no time. I didn’t think I would, but I did.
I can’t find your follow button, but I’d like to follow.
